having just gotten off the cable car at the Schwarzsee stop and beginning my hike to the Hörnlihütte.

Schwarzsee, literally translating as "Black Lake," is a lake located in Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is located below the Matterhorn and at elevation of 2552 m (8373 feet). Its surface area of 0.5 ha and a chapel dedicated to Mary of the Snows borders the lake.

The lake lends its name to the mountain ridge (2583 m) above and can be reached by cable car or on foot from Zermatt.
